The Eternal Ministry of Jesus Christ

What do we understand about the ministry of Jesus? Did He only minister while He walked the earth as described in the Gospels? I would like to show you some truths about His ministry. Let us start with Heb. 13:8 :“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever”

What does this mean to you? The first thing it shows us is that He is unchanging: what He did yesterday, He is doing today and in the future. In the Gospels we find His miraculous ministry: John: 21:25: He did many other things: do not have a complete record

How many days are recorded in the Gospels? Yes, I know it was three and a half years, but only 53 events were actually recorded. Theses events are packed into 23-27 days, but we do not have one complete day recorded anywhere: the Gospels just give us snapshots of the events that happened.

Even so, what did He do on those snippets that we have? Mt. 4:23: “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.”

So, He was teaching, preaching & healing. The Greek word for His healings that is used in the Bible is therapeuo: This word is used 95% of the time and we get our word, therapy, from it. The word implies a healing touch that requires corresponding action of faith.

For instance, Jesus told the man with the withered arm: “Stretch forth your arm”, and the paralysed man: “Get up, pick up mat and walk.” Therefore, therapeuo seems to imply that the person prayed fro had to do some action to release their faith.

Years ago our domestic servant in South Africa, hurt her shoulder washing a mat and could not lift her arm up at all. After she showed me, with a grimace of pain what little movement she had, my two small children and I prayed for her and she thanked us and wanted to walk away, but I said to her: “Now lift up your arm.” and she did without any problem at all. By adding her faith to ours, the healing happened! I have never seen a bigger smile or seen a person work as vigorously and joyfully as she did that day!

What happened, we applied therapeuo, as Jesus demonstrated, and it happened! Not because of any miracle power we had, but because of Jesus’ healing power, because we prayed in His Name!

However, there are other words used in the Gospels for the healings He did: when Matthew says he healed “all kinds of sickness”, the Greek word for sickness is nosos , a terminal condition with no natural cure, but Jesus healed them all,

The word for diseases in that verse is malakia: a crippling or debilitating: can live with it, but can’t function. Jesus healed all these people and “His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments” (Mt. 5:24).

According to our Scripture in Hebrews, He is still the same today and the church is in this state during our time: some have a crippling condition and can’t function, and others are dying, spiritually. I am always amazed to see how little people on quiz programmes know about the Bible, but they know all about Harry Potter and other witches. this is because the world is tormented and demonised today Only Jesus can cure it: He is still the same today as He was in the Gospels. People thronged to Him to hear him and be touched by Him. Matthew says their ears were ringing with the news of what He is doing.

The same thing will happen today if we spread the Good News and start praying for people! They will throng to us to hear more and be touched, for we are now His hands and feet and voice.

My dear friend, what are you personally doing about it: are we spreading Good News today?
