When he was little boy, Dr. Meyer’s father read to him from the Children’s Bible every night and showed him the colourful pictures that someone had painted and inserted to illuminate the stories. It is an experience that has stayed with him all his life and in this book he brings some of the pictures of Genesis to our attention so as to show us how God illuminated the stories there with images in order for us to see Jesus on every page. Most people think that Jesus was only active in the Bible from the time He was born in Bethlehem, but the truth is that He was very busy in the Old Testament. This is obvious from many verses in the New Testament, especially the one in Luke 24, when He appeared to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, “and beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.” The images of Christ abound in the Old Testament. From the first day of creation, right through the whole book of Genesis, there are many pictures that can be traced from the words. Most of the time we read over them without realising their significance, but Dr. Meyer van Rensburg has studied the Scriptures to see if he can find some of the things that Jesus could have told these disciples and he uncovered a virtual treasure trove of images that are painted into the first book of the Bible. Starting with the first chapter, he looks at the images that are shining through the words written there and explains how the days of creation reveals Christ as the Great Redeemer and the creation of Adam and Eve shows Him as the Great Builder. Turning through the pages, we find more images of Christ in the chapters that follow, as He is revealed as the Tree of Life, the Lamb of God; the Great Restgiver and many more. This volume concentrates on the first 10 chapters of Genesis and discloses one image per chapter. As we see all these images emerge, it explains the work of Christ in one picture after another, so that we can gain a better understanding of the truths of our redemption. In the next Volume, more images will be revealed, but these will concentrate on the patriarchs in Genesis, to show how they were types and shadows of Christ. Recently many expositors and learned men have attacked Genesis as a book of myths, but this study shows how the very words that were written by Moses was given to him by the Holy Spirit to give us an unveiling of Jesus Christ as the Saviour of Mankind and how much He loves us.
